When you think of Italy, you probably think of the rolling hills of Tuscany, the romantic canals of Venice or the ancient ruins of Rome. But can I tell you, the region that I just don’t think gets enough attention, it’s one of my favorite regions and it’s the region of Puglia, Italy. Tucked in the heel of Italy’s boot, Puglia is a region where time stands still, the food is memorable and the scenery is all magical. Allow me to take you on a small tour of this beautiful area.
Why Puglia Should Be on Your Travel Bucket List
Puglia is one of those places that seems a well-kept secret. It doesn’t have a crush of tourists, and that’s part of its appeal. You’ll find yourself meandering through whitewashed villages, endless olive groves and coastlines that even surpass the beauty of the Amalfi Coast — without the crowds. For a genuine taste of Italy, Puglia more than fits the bill.
Most Iconic Trulli of Alberobello
Perhaps one of the first things that attracted me to Puglia was its distinctive architecture. But have you ever seen those cone-shaped tiny homes that look like they belong in a fairytale? Those are trulli, and the best place to see them is in Alberobello. Strolling the narrow streets of this UNESCO World Heritage site feels like going back in time. There I remember sipping espresso at a tiny café, watching sunlight bounce off the white stone walls — pure magic.
The Sinning Coast: Beaches and Quay Caves
If you love a beach, Puglia will steal your heart. The region features some of the country’s finest beaches. From the golden shores of Pescoluse (often referred to as the “Maldives of Italy”) to the spectacular cliffs of Polignano a Mare, there’s a beach for everyone. A boat tour of Gargano’s sea caves is one of my favorite memories. It was so clear, the water appeared like liquid sapphire.
A Food Lover’s Paradise
Let’s get into the food, primarily because quite frankly it’s one of the reasons I keep returning to Puglia. Its cuisine is both simple and flavorful —mind-food. Have you ever had orecchiette pasta? It is a Puglian specialty, served with rich tomato sauce or broccoli rabe. And I haven’t even mentioned the olive oil — some of the best in the world comes from Puglia. Add fresh seafood, local wine and a slice of pasticciotto (a creamy pastry) and you’ve got a meal you won’t forget.
The Warmth of the Region’s People
But what makes Puglia so very special are its people. The locals are some of the friendliest, warmest people I’ve ever met. I will never forget how I got lost in a small village and an elderly couple invited me into their home for a glass of home-made wine. It’s moments like this that make Puglia feel like my second home.
Conclusion: Here’s Why You Won’t Want to Leave Puglia
Puglia is not only a destination, it’s an experience. Whether you’re visiting ancient towns, sunbathing on pristine beaches or enjoying incredible food, there’s something about this region that tends to steal your heart. So, if you’re dreaming of a trip to Italy, do yourself a favor and make sure Puglia is on your itinerary. You’ll thank me for it, I promise.
